Hey folks! Our current unit in the kids curriculum is about the Church: what it is, what it does, and what it means to be a part of it. Of course, this material is being presented to our 4-9 year-olds, but this stuff is equally good to give to older kids!
Here are some of the things they've been learning, and how you can continue to lead them into the fullness of faith:
Catechism Question
Q: What is the church?
A: The Church is the whole community of baptized, faithful Christians in heaven and on earth, called and formed by God into one people.
Scripture
The Church is the FAMILY of God (Gal. 6:10)
The Church is the BODY of Christ (1 Cor. 12:4-31)
The Church is the TEMPLE of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 2:18-22; 1 Pt. 2:4-6)
Creed
I believe . . . in the holy, catholic, Church. (line 14 of the Apostle's Creed)
Questions for your kids
What could it mean that the Church is a family? How is it like your family? How is it different?
How do you think God has gifted you? What gifts do you see in others at All Souls? How has God gifted your neighbors?
What might it mean the Church is the temple of the Holy Spirit? (hint: 1. God is near to us when we gather, and 2. God has made us Holy)
Holy Imagination
Learning the faith isn't just about memorizing facts. It's about seeing the world as it really is: "charged with the grandeur of God." Introducing your kids to the lives of the Saints is a great way to stoke the fire of their imagination - the Church is the whole community of the baptized faithful: in heaven and on earth!
Peace,
