This week marks the third week of “Ordinary Time”!
Having walked through the story of Jesus—his incarnation, birth, life and ministry, death, resurrection, ascension, and descent of his Spirit, we move into the time of year where we gather up that story and walk the path of faith.
This Sunday happens to be the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the high feast days of the Christian year!
We celebrate the lives and martyrdom of Sts. Peter and Paul for a number of reasons. Between the two of them, we receive most of the New Testament. Between the two of them, they were probably the most influential (certainly historically) Apostles (and therefore Christians). Famously, they had a public dispute about how to treat the Gentiles. Both were specifically restored to communion and ministry with Christ in dramatic ways. Both were martyred.
This week we’ll read both accounts of how Jesus found them and called them to himself. Two very different men—one an academic, one a hot-head day laborer. One a persecutor of the Church, the other a denier of Christ. And because of the inexhaustible love of God, both are at the very center of God’s redemptive work in the world, even today, 2000 years later.
Scripture to consider:
Luke 5:1-11
Acts 9:1-31
Question for your kids
I wonder: What is Jesus trying to show Peter about himself when he gives him all those fish?
I wonder: What would you do if you saw a blinding light and heard the voice of Jesus?
Peace,
Danny+
